  • Mahatma Gandhi an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer was born on 2 October, 1869 at Porbandar, India.
  • His role in the freedom struggle is not forgettable. His non-violent protest or satyagraha achieved political and social progress. Mahatma Gandhi, the name is now one of the most universally recognised on the Earth.
  • His full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was known to his various followers as Mahatma, or “the great-souled one”.
  • He was well known for his ascetic lifestyle.No doubt, his life and teachings inspired several activists including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. He was the leader of the non-violent independence movement against British rule.

“ International coffee day is celebrated on 1 October”.

  • To promote coffee as one of the most loved beverages, International Coffee Day is celebrated on October 1 every year.
  • This year’s theme for International Coffee day is to support and recognise the hard work of millions of farmers who provide us with the magical beverage.
  • In the year 2014, a meeting by the International Coffee Organization concluded to launch its first official International Coffee Day in Milan. The first  International Coffee Day was celebrated on October 1, 2015.
  • As per the International Coffee Organization, this year’s theme for the International Coffee Day was to appreciate the efforts of the millions of farmers. This day is celebrated to recognise the efforts of the people related to the industry– Farmers, roasters, baristas and coffee shop owners. Many brands offer discounts on this day to celebrate Coffee as a beverage.

“’Make Small Strong’ campaign by Google to help small and local businesses: Here’s everything you need to know”.

  • Google India has launched ‘Make Small Strong’ campaign in India to support small and local businesses in the country. The initiative is in partnership with Jagran.com.
  • The aim of the initiative is to help grow small and local businesses such as local kirana or book stores, vegetable and fruit vendors, etc. that proved to be instrumental during the nationwide lockdown.
  • Google in a blog post is requesting the citizens of the country to join hands for an initiative to support small businesses. This is because when we support small, we make their business strong. This, in turn, will make our country strong.

“FAME India Scheme Phase-II: Government sanctions 670 electric buses and 241 charging stations”.

  • In a step towards eco-friendly transportation, the Government of India has sanctioned 670 Electric buses in 4 Indian states. The government has also sanctioned 241 charging stations in 7 Indian cities under the Phase-II of FAME India Scheme.
  • Prakash Javadekar, the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, in a series of tweet, announced the sanction of 670 e-buses and 241 charging stations different Indian States under the FAME India Scheme.
  • The scheme is introduced to carry forward Prime Minister Modi’s vision of eco-friendly public transportation

“Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, Jack Dorsey to virtually testify in Senate on October 28”.

  • The big tech CEO are again going to be part of a virtual Senate hearing in the US. Facebook CEO mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey have voluntarily agreed to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on October 28.
  • The hearing is going to be about a key law that protects internet companies.
  • The decision from big tech companies came a day after the senate committee unanimously voted to approve a plan to subpoena the three CEOs to appear before the panel, Reuters reported.
  • The big tech companies — Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon — recently testified before the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel.

“New Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020: all you need to know”.

  • On September 28, 2020, the Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh unveiled the new Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP)-2020 Document. The DAP 2020 has come into effect starting today, i.e. October 1, 2020.
  • DAP 2020 is in line with the vision of creating Aatma Nirbhar Bharat and aims to empower the domestic industry in India through the Make in India initiative.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh releases New Defence Acquisition Procedure at Defence Acquisition Council meeting in South Block.

“World’s first ‘Tram Library’ unveiled in Kolkata: all you need to know”.

  • In a first, the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) has launched maiden tram service in Kolkata for students preparing for competitive exams.
  • As of now, a 32-seater car will run on the Shyambazar-Esplanade route. This will not only attract the students but will also reinvigorate the love for trams and reading.
  • This came after the services on the Shyambazar-Esplanade route resumed. It must be noted that this tram route was also damaged in Cyclone Amphan, along with 5 other tram routes.
  • Kolkata is the only city in India to have a tram network.

“Eye on investors, govt plans to list LIC abroad”.

  • The government is evaluating the option for an overseas listing of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), the country’s largest insurer, in what many believe will be a powerful signal to global investors.
  • The government has already announced its intent for an initial public offer (IPO) by the insurance giant, while also amending the Companies Act to allow Indian companies to directly list on foreign bourses.

“NABARD to undertake Sanitation Literacy Campaign in 2,000 villages”.

  • Agriculture and Rural Development is embarking on a Sanitation Literacy Campaign (SLC) from October 2 to promote literacy on ‘WASH’ (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in 2,000 villages across the country covering one lakh rural population.
  • The objective of the campaign, which would continue till January 26, 2021, is to focus on inculcating significant behavioural changes towards adapting good hygiene and sanitation practices, according to a NABARD 
  • NABARD also said that under the Swachh Bharat Mission, it has actively supported Government of India in construction of 3.29 crore household toilets by sanctioning and disbursing an amount of Rs 15,000 crore and Rs 12,298 crore, respectively.
  • “The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasised the need for maintaining good hygiene and sanitation practices both at community level as well as at individual level,” it added.

“Twitter Appoints Rinki Sethi as New Information Security Head”.

  • Twitter appointed Rinki Sethi, a former information security executive at IBM, as its chief information security officer, the social media company said in a tweet on Monday.
  • Sethi had previously worked as the vice president of information security at cyber-security firm  Palo Alto, according to her linkedin profile
