24 December: National Consumer Day

  • The National Consumer Day is observed every year in India on December 24. On this day the Consumer Protection Act received the then President’s approval in 1986.
  • The main objective of the Consumer Protection Act is to provide consumers with effective safeguards against different types of exploitation such as defective goods, unsatisfactory services and unfair trade practices.
  • Nowadays you can file your complaint against the shopkeeper online too. You can register the complaint on the official website of government made available on the pubic platform, i.e. https://consumerhelpline.gov.in/

Sebi signs pact with Kazakhstan-based AFSA for mutual co-operation

  • Markets regulator Sebi on Monday said it has signed a pact with Kazakhstan’s Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) for mutual co-operation and technical assistance.
  • The objective of the bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) is to strengthen cross border co-operation in the area of securities regulation, Sebi said in a press release.

Army Major develops bullet-proof jacket for protection from sniper rifle attacks

  • In a strong step towards foiling Pakistani sniper attacks on Indian soldiers, Indian Army officer Major Anoop Mishra has developed a bulletproof jacket that can effectively stop bullets from sniper rifles.
  • We have developed the level 4 bulletproof jacket that has been developed at the college of military engineering in Pune and can provide full-body protection against sniper rifle bullets. We are the only third country in the world to have that ability, Maj Anoop Mishra said.
  • The officer was awarded the Army Design Bureau Excellence Award by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat at the Army Technology Seminar on Monday.

FSSAI, NASVI to organise street food festival in Delhi from Dec 25

  • National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) and food regulator FSSAI will jointly organise national street food festival in the national capital during December 25-29.
  • The 11th National Street Food Festival will be organised at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium here and around 75,000 people are expected to visit the festival.
  • During the event, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will  also organise its second edition of the ‘National Eat Right Mela’ to promote healthy foods.

IAF Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria to visit Egypt for bilateral talks

  • Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, Chief of Air Staff, is on a bilateral goodwill visit to Egypt from 24 to 28 December. The Air Chief Marshal is scheduled to visit various operational and training establishments of the Egyptian Air Force and also interact with senior officials of the Egyptian Armed Forces.
  • The visit will provide an impetus towards enhancing defence cooperation between the two Air Forces, as well as strengthening the long standing bilateral relations between India and Egypt, said the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in a Press communication.

Indian ambassador to US Harsh Vardhan Shringla is next foreign secretary

  • India’s ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, was named by the government on Monday as the next foreign secretary and he will take over from incumbent Vijay Gokhale in January. Shringla, who took over as the envoy in Washington in January, is a career diplomat who was seen as a frontrunner for the top post for several months.
  • An official statement said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved the appointment of Shringla, an officer of the 1984 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), as foreign secretary with effect from January 29, 2020 on Gokhale’s completion of a two-year term.

Oxygen Parlour inaugurated at Nashik Railway Station

  • An Oxygen Parlour opened at Nashik railway station to combat air pollution.
    To provide an experience of breathing clean air to the commuters. The initiative comes with the efforts of the Air Guard in collaboration with the Indian Railways.
  • The Oxygen Parlour totally based on the recommendation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA conducted a study in which they identified some plants that better absorb the five most harmful pollutants from the air. The reach of this initiative and help improve the air quality across the country.
  • The commuters at the railway station also commended the effort as a positive step towards combating air pollution in the cities across the country. This is a reasonable effort towards improving air quality.

UT’s central forensic lab gets ₹99cr DNA analysis centre

  • Minister of state for home affairs, Nityanand Rai, on Monday inaugurated the Sakhi Suraksha Advanced DNA Forensic Laboratory at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Sector 36.
  • The ₹99.76 crore centre has been set up under the Nirbhaya Fund scheme with an aim to make the process of criminal investigation efficient.
  • The city’s first advanced DNA forensic lab will allow investigators to examine criminal cases in the northern states faster and bring down the number of unsolved cases, said officials. The lab will increase the capacity of analysing cases to 2,000 per year compared to 140-150 cases per year at present, they said.

National Green Corps Ecoclub programme meets for the first time

  • On December 23, 2019, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) organized an annual meeting of state nodal agencies implementing the Ecoclub programme for the first time.
  • Around 200 students from the state of Gujarat also participated in the programme.
  • Ecoclub awards were awarded to school students at national level.

  • The Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways and Minister for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Nitin Gadkari, and Minister of State (MoS) of the Ministry of DoNER, PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, were present during the adoption of the Resolution.

  • On December 23, 2019, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs announced that urban areas of 35 states have been declared Open Defecation Free.
  • With Star Rating Protocol the ministry streamlines solid waste management in cities.
  • The rural areas of India were declared Open Defecation Free on October 2, 2019.
