Centre pays Rs 50,850 crore to farmers under PM-KISAN scheme

  • The Centre on Saturday said it has disbursed Rs 50,850 crore to farmers so far under its landmark scheme PM-KISAN, enabling them to meet farm input cost and household expenses.
  • The agriculture ministry shared the progress made under the scheme, ahead of its first anniversary on February 24.
  • The PM-KISAN was formally launched on February 24 last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Bharti Infratel board to meet on Feb 24 post DoT’s nod for merger with Indus Towers

  • Bharti InfratelNSE -0.15 % on Saturday said its board will meet on February 24 to chart out the future course of action following the telecom department’s approval for merger with Indus Towers.
  • The combination of Bharti Infratel and Indus Towers will create a pan-India tower company with over 163,000 towers, operating across all 22 telecom service areas. The combined entity will be the largest tower company in the world outside China.

China reports 648 new cases of Coronavirus on Feb 22, 97 more deaths

  • Mainland China had 648 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections on Saturday, the National Health Commission said on Sunday, up from 397 the previous day.
  • That brings the total number of confirmed cases in China to 76,936 so far
  • The death toll rose to 2,442, up by 97 from the previous day.

Democracy in India gave rise to identity-based politics: Pranab Mukherjee

  • Former president Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said democracy and republicanism were two values people must strive to protect and cherish, and termed identity politics a positive development in relation to the deepening of democratic ethos.
  • Pranab Mukherjee was delivering the valedictory address at the 10th edition of the Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad here.
  • “Democracy in India gave rise to identity-based politics. Purely from the lens of deepening democracy, I see this as a positive development because it leads to wider representation. However, an electorate divided on caste and community lines throws up a polarised mandate,” Pranab Mukherjee said.

Way paved for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya under PM Modi’s leadership: Yogi Adityanath

  • After the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Ayodhya title suit case in November last year, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the city for the first time on Sunday. Addressing a gathering of prominent seers, Yogi Adityanath said a way has been paved for the construction of a grand Ram temple under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Yogi Adityanath said, “We are grateful to PM Modi for fulfilling the promises made to the people. Abrogation of Article 370 is a historical move. Amendments in the citizenship law and ban on triple talaq have also been done by him. Under the PM’s leadership, a way has been paved for the construction of a grand Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.”
