“Former President Pranab Mukherjee passes away”

  • Former President Pranab Mukherjee was cremated with full state honours at the Lodhi road electric crematorium
  • His son Abhijit Mukherjee performed his last rites.
  • An Army contingent gave a guard of honour and a gun salute to the former president.
  • He was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and was operated the same day for removal of a clot in the brain.
  • He had also tested positive for COVID-19 at the time of his admission.
  • The former president later developed a lung infection.
  • Mukherjee was the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017.

  • Japan has committed the loan for the COVID-19 Crisis Emergency Response Supportin order to fight the COVID-19 crisis.
  • The ODA loan will support India’s efforts in its fight against COVID-19.
  • It will also assist the country to prepare the health system to handle future epidemics.
  • It will also increase the resilience of India’s health systems against infectious diseases.

“Dept. of Fertilizers observes Swachhta Pakhwada from 1-15 September 2020”

  • The fertiliser department and public sector units under its administrative control are observing ”Swachhta Pakhwada” during September 1-15.
  • All PSUs and other organizations under the department are participating in the Swachhta Abhiyan in a big way, an official statement said.
  • Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister DV Sadananda Gowda said in a tweet that Swachhta Pakhwada has gained even greater importance this year in view of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Fertiliser Secretary Chhabilendra Roul administered Swachhata pledge on Tuesday to senior officers of the department.

“Ease of Doing Business report suspended by World Bank”

  • The World Bank said it was pausing publication of its annual Doing Business Report, which carries the Ease of Doing Business rankings, to investigate data collection irregularities
  • The World Bank said that it would conduct a systematic review and assessment of data changes in the last five Doing Business reports, adding that independent auditors will investigate data collection and review processes.
  • The statement also said that the board of executive directors of the World Bank and authorities of the countries that were affected by the data irregularities have been informed about the situation.
  • The annual ranking of countries’ business and investment climates has been important for the Narendra Modi government, which has taken credit for the improved rankings.

“Indian economy contracted by 23.9% in Q1 of 2020-21”

  • Hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has shrunk by 23.9 per cent in the first quarter of the financial year 2020-21.
  • GDP has shrunk from Rs 35.35 lakh crore in Q1 of 2019-20 to Rs 26.90 lakh crore in the first quarter of Q1 of 2020-21, showing a contraction of 23.9 per cent as compared to 5.2 per cent growth in Q1 2019-20.
  • In the corresponding quarter in the last financial year, the Indian economy had registered grown at a rate of 5 per cent.
  • In the previous quarter, Q4 FY2019-20, India’s GDP growth rate was 3.1 per cent.
  • The worst-hit sector in the first quarter of FY2020-21 was construction, which contracted by 50 per cent.
  • The only sector which managed to survive the slump was agriculture, which registered a growth of 3.4 per cent.

“Lewis Hamilton wins F1 Belgian Grand Prix 2020”

  • Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton swept to his fourth victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, leading home his team mate Valtteri Bottas as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took third to maintain his record of finishing on the podium at every race he’s been classified in this year.

“CSIR-CMERI develops World’s Largest Solar Tree”

  • In a bid to promote the usage of Solar energy, CSIR’s Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute have developed world’s largest ‘solar tree’ which is installed at its residential complex in Durgapur in West Bengal.
  • The solar tree has been designed in a manner to ensure maximum exposure of each solar photovoltaic (PV) panel to sunlight and also creation of the least amount of shadow area beneath.
  • According to Dr Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, the installed capacity of the Solar Tree is above 11.5 kWp (kilowatts peak).
  • It has the annual capacity to generate 12,000-14,000 units of Clean and Green Power.
  • There are a total of 35 Solar PV Panels in each tree with a capacity of 330 wp (watts peak) each.
