Covid-19 is an infectious disease which is caused by newly discovered coronavirus. In the word Covid-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘Corona’, ‘VI’ stands for ‘Virus’, ‘D’ stands for ‘Disease’; which means covid-19 is a coronavirus disease. It was discovered in the year 2019 in China that’s why it has 19 at end.
Covid-19 is a worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS- CoV-2) and some types of common cold.
The first case of Covid-19 in India was reported on January 2020. Till date, India is the country with highest number of Covid-19 patients in Asia, and ranked 2nd in world after US. Around 27.4M cases are filed for the virus and almost 898K people died due to this pandemic worldwide.
The outbreak of this virus has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), and till now virus has spread to various countries and territories. Still, we are unaware about lot of facts of coronavirus pandemic.
Symptoms of Covid-19
The most common symptoms of this virus are fever, cough, and cold. Furthermore, less observed symptoms are sore throat, conjunctivitis, aches and pains, diarrhoea, loss of taste or smell, skin rashes. The far-reaching symptoms are difficulty or shortness in breathing, chest pain, loss of speech or movement.
People who are healthy but have some mild symptoms can manage their symptoms and cure it at home. If we count on an average, it takes around 5-6 days to show the symptoms of virus; furthermore maximum time can be 14 days.
It is transmitted through direct contact with an infectious person, contact maybe in terms of touching, respiratory droplets (coughing and sneezing).
People at risk
It is observed that old age people and person with chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure problem; appears to have more risk of developing severe symptoms for the virus. And speedy or complete recovery of such people is not assured. However, person of any age can be affected by the virus. As this is new virus, so researchers are still working to get accurate details about the coronavirus.
Precautions which should be taken
Preventive actions should be taken to slow down its spread and to protect ourselves from this virus-
- Stay at home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth, nose while going out from home or coming in contact of any other person (whether infectious or not).
- Wash hands frequently with soap or sanitizer (prefer according to situation).
- Don’t touch your face after touching any surface or person, immediately sanitize them.
- Stay away from person who has fever, cough, cold etc.
- Take measures to strong your immune system (as immunity plays a major factor).
Treatment of Covid-19
There is no proper treatment yet discovered for this virus. However, the work on developing the vaccine is in progress by many countries, but no such vaccine has yet developed completely.
Furthermore, it can be treated if discovered at an early stage with the healthcare under the guidance of a medical official. But recovery from the treatment given cannot be assured at any stage. There are several clinical trials which are conducted to evaluate potential therapeutics for Covid-19.
